I’ve been frustrated by my PC for sometime and finally made the move to a Mac mini. My PC was suffering from very slow start up, services.exe would run and use more and more memory (I setup the task manager to monitor the virtual memory). Eventually I turned off the virtual memory so on start up services.exe would grow to 1Gbyte hit the memory limit, you then get a “low on virtual memory” message, services.exe goes to a few hundred kbytes and everything runs sort of ok until you open too many files and you run out of memory…

Migrating my files from the PC was straight forward. I copied the files across the network to the Mac. To setup Mozy you have to delete your computer from your Mozy account and then add the Mac, follow the steps shown below:

If you don’t need to restore any file from your PC, you will have to delete the machine completely from your account. The steps that will help you are:
1.Login to your account online from www.mozy.com/login
2.Towards the left pane please click on “my computer”
3.For the computer which you wish to delete, click on the option “delete” towards the right.
4.After the machine is deleted you will have to remove the unused computers.

For more information on replace, please visit the link below:
http://support.mozy.com/docs/en-user-home-win/guide/concepts/migrate_platforms_faq.html

Uploading the files can take a few days. I turned off power saving so that the backups continued at full speed. Mozy has a great feature to throttle the bandwith and limit the backup to certain times.

You are probably used to using Google Toolbar, possibly Google Maps, Gmail and Calender but here are a few other usefull tools to help organise your online life

Google Notebook

Clip useful information. You can add clippings of text, images and links from web pages to your Google Notebook without ever leaving your browser window.

Organize your notes. You can create multiple notebooks, divide them into sections, and drag-and-drop your notes to stay organized.

Get access from anywhere. You can access your Google Notebooks from any computer by using your Google Accounts login.

Publish your notebook. You can share your Google Notebook with friend and colleagues.

Installing and using Notebook

To use Google Notebook, go to Google Notebook, sign in or open a Google account to activate Google Notebook.

Once you have signed into Google Notebook you will see a link at the top of the page “Download the browser extension”. This installs software on your PC that allows you to use more features (described below). Install the software.

After Google Notebook software is installed you will see a small blue notebook icon at the bottom right of your web browser. Click on this icon and it displays your notebooks.

Its best to add a new notebook for each topic you are researching. Open notebook by clicking on the notebook icon in the right hand corner of your browser, pull down the “Actions” box and select “New notebook”, for example name this “Travel info”. When you get to a webpage with some usefull information you wish to save, select the text to save, click your right hand mouse key and select “Note this (Google Notepad)” this information will be added to your “Travel info” notebook (or the notebook you last selected).

Another way to add a notes, is to open Google Notebook by clicking the icon and then pressing the “Add note” button. Type in text and then click save. Google Notebook automatically saves the website address.
