How does Depositit online backup work?

Once you have Downloaded and installed the Depositit Software you can setup a backup definition. This determines the files/directories that are to be backed up. You can run Depositit on a single computer or over a network of computers. The backup runs automatically once a day, all the files/directories in your backup definition are compressed encrypted and  sent over the Internet to three secure servers. All this happens automatically without any user intervention.

When you need to recover a file, open Depositit and go to the "restore" panel. You will be prompted for your password and for each backup definition you will find the files for the last 30-days. See the picture below. Select the files or directories to recover and then restore them to the original location or to a new location. This is excellent for retrieving documents overwritten by mistake.

Data loss is a growing problem and losing data, such as letters, databases, e-mails, or music files causes major disruption, and if you are a business impacts heavily on your ability to trade.

How safe is your data?

1. The data on all computers can be lost or corrupted as a result of viruses, human error, power failures, fire, flood, hardware malfunctions and theft – These threats are beyond your control.

2. According to the dti: "70% of businesses that have suffered a severe data loss closed down within 18 months".

3. The cost of data loss is now so high that most Insurance companies refuse to cover it. Making daily backup copies of your data and storing them correctly will protect you and there are two ways you can do this. 1. Back up manually using traditional methods or 2. Back up automatically using Depositit Backing up manually takes time and effort and as a consequence may often be neglected! Someone always has to remember to rotate the media, carry out the backup, confirm that it did so successfully and then store it safely off-site. Also what happens when the person responsible is sick or on holiday? Backing up manually can also give a false sense of security, as the media used is prone to wear and tear, so even following these lengthy procedures does not guarantee that your files will be retrievable when the critical time comes to restore them. Backup copies are worthless if they can’t actually be restored!

DEPOSITIT backs up your data automatically, every single day over a secure Internet connection, stores three separate copies in three maximum-security off-site facilities and then sends you an e-mail to confirm the backup is complete. The entire process is completely automatic. There’s nothing to remember, nothing to do and no hardware to buy or maintain. Depositit encrypts your data using military grade 448-bit technology, ensuring complete privacy and guaranteeing that nobody but you can ever view it.

If data from your computer, laptop, PDA or mobile phone is ever lost, stolen or corrupted, Depositit ensures that there is always a current copy available for immediate retrieval. All you have to do is simply select the data you want to restore, be it a single document, digital photos, music files or your entire hard drive, then select OK and watch a copy instantly return to your computer. It’s that easy. Depositit also automatically archives 30 previous copies of your data, so if you ever get a virus, you can go back in time and retrieve a clean copy that was made before the attack. Depositit is the safest, easiest and most secure solution for all your data protection needs

How much does it cost?

Using traditional backup devices will cost a minimum of £300 a year (this includes time spent backing up, hardware & media) and does not guarantee 100% that your data will be retrievable. Additional expense may also be required for engineers if the device fails! Depositit costs just £10 a month. £120 a year for a state of the art data protection service that automatically backs up your PC’s, laptops, pda’s, mobile phone and networks every single day. What would you miss more … £10 a month or all the data on your computer? Depositit is the safest, easiest, fastest, and most cost effective solution for all your data protection needs. Data Loss Story

A couple more stories have emerged on Data Loss that you may or may not have come across over the past few weeks.

The first was from a few days ago, advising that Zurich Insurance in South Africa were backing up to Tapes and they lost one of them. This tape held over 1 million documents, over 50,000 related to UK policy holders who have been informed of the loss! Read more insurancetimes.co.uk The second headline shows once again the security risks & flaws using Cloud based Systems. T-Mobile USA provide a syncing service on one of their devices that syncs your personal information to Microsoft servers in a Cloud Based Storage Centre. Apparently the data was lost because they attempted to upgrade a storage array without backing it up first! Read more washingtonpost.com Depositit have always been against single server backup systems, faceless cloud locations and the cheap backup solutions that have come onto the market. They are not secure and time after time we are reminded about their security flaws. Depositit always saves data to a minimum of 2 separate locations and have trading relationships with all 3 of our data centres, we also own and manage all of our infrastructure in order to retain as much control as possible. There’s no denying that times are tough at the moment, and "cheap alternatives" are being sourced for just about everything. Its one thing replacing your Cornflakes with a supermarket’s own brand but no business should be taking risks with their IT Support and Backups. If the businesses that you manage are not yet using Depositit, maybe it’s time to set it up for them.
