Breaking news is that a major player in the (US) backup market ‘X-Drive’ is being closed down.

All users are being informed to restore their data and store it elsewhere!

X-Drive is owned by AOL and they have decided to ‘retire’ the service as it’s not making them any money. We’ve heard similar things, i.e companies not making any money about a number of other popular low cost consumer backup solutions.

A major reason for this is due to the price war these firms are in with each other, I.e who can offer the most storage for next to nothing. Clearly if not enough money is coming through to cover the essential costs then it won’t be long before the service has to be canned!

Depositit has been providing and supporting it’s business backup service for almost 10 years now and are very experienced in how much it costs to run this ’service’. Yes we’re frequently asked why we won’t match these new and emerging low cost solutions and the reason is because we care about our customers and their data and intend to be around as they continue to grow. Also, you simply cannot provide a business service of this kind for nothing.

These low cost solutions are often selling at a loss which is mis-leading and ultimately everyone ends up getting into trouble (the companies go under and customer’s potentially lose their data).

Gmail Filters and Labels

Gmail has a large amount of storage so you can keep all your emails, the problem is it can become difficult to find old emails. Filters with Labels are a great way to keep track of connected emails.

To create a Filter select “Settings” (top right of screen)
Click the “Filters” tab, then select “Create a new Filter”
You can now enter the criteria. So for example to filter all emails from pcbackuphelp.com and mozy.com enter the following in the FROM box:
((pcbackuphelp.com) OR (mozy.com))
you can also check for text strings by typing in the “Has the words” box. You can use the OR construct e.g.
((online backup) OR (internet backup))
When you have selected the filter criteria press the “Test Search” button.
When you are happy with the results, press “Next Step”.
Now select “Apply the Label” and enter “new label ..” then click “Create Filter”
All emails that meet your search criteria will be labeled and can be found easily by clicking the appropriate label.
